March 2021 Update

Penrose was pleasantly blessed with several snow storms that provided us with well needed moisture the first part of the month. Temperatures were within normal winter ranges 30’s and 40’s during the daytime and in the teens at night.  Ag Met Sensor in Penrose recorded a total of  .66 of an inch of precipitation from the storms.

Creek levels stayed the same through out the winter months. The low levels only provided enough water to provide Penrose Water District’s water for domestic needs and very little went on down the canal to Brush Hollow. Currently Brush Hollow is at 71.4 ft. which is 20 ft. low from the full level of 93 ft. Last year at this time we were at 81 ft. Skaguay has recently released more water down the creek which equates to an additional 2 or 3 c.f.s. that we can put in the reservoir. Typically; we don’t begin irrigations until the middle of April unless we have an abundance of water. At this time, due to the low levels in the creek and reservoir, no date has been established. Our area is still considered to be in a moderate drought and many areas in Colorado have shown improvement after the recent snows this month. We are hoping for more snow or rain in April and May to better our chances of providing irrigations.

Results of the Board of Director Elections voted in Charlie Newlon as the newest Board Member and Jack Tyler was re-elected to the Board. Congratulations Charlie and Jack. As a reminder the Board of Directors welcomes any shareholder who wishes to intern for the Board. Please contact the office to let us know you are interested so you can be introduced to the Board at the monthly meeting you choose to begin your internship. Attending the meetings provides you with the functions of the Board and decisions that are made monthly. It also gives you the opportunity to learn about the system, historical and current. Monthly meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm located at 209 Broadway. Currently we are limiting attendance as seating is difficult to maintain the 6 ft social distancing rule and we do require masks to be worn.

Please continue to pray for rain!
