What a
turnaround we have had; thanks to the wonderful rain storms received this month.
According to the AG met sensor located in Penrose, we have received a total of
.63 of precipitation. However, keep in mind that depends on location. The
sensor is located on the south east side of Penrose and many residents
experienced significantly more rain on the north side during one of the rain
storms that passed through. What the rain means to irrigators is that we are
now able to begin delivering second irrigations.
At the
beginning of the month the creek was running consistently at 13-15 cfs and the
reservoir was at 73.75 ft. Needless to
say most of the irrigation water was coming directly from the reservoir.
Towards the middle of the month we experienced an increased amount in the creek
to 28 cfs which continued to rise up to 65.90 cfs at which time a decision was
made to close the reservoir and utilize all the water from the upper ditch
using the systems transfers. This permitted irrigations to continue and start
putting water into the reservoir. Unfortunately all good things do come to an
end with the creek returning to 20 cfs by the 25th, however we were
able to capture and increase the reservoir to 76.79 ft. Compliments to our Superintendent, Connie for
taking advantage of the sudden purge of creek water and being able to not only
continue to irrigate but to increase the reservoirs volume. July’s weather
forecast is for temperatures to remain in the 90’s with occasional afternoon
showers. Beginning the last week of
June, the ditch riders have begun to schedule and deliver second irrigations.
We don’t know just how many irrigations we will be able to deliver, however if
the reservoir reaches 71 ft. we will need to suspend irrigations. Depending on
the creek, we will reopen the reservoir either late this week or early next
week.
For all of those who are
wondering why we were not impacted by Colorado’s significant snow pack and snow
melt this spring, simply put; our water decrees are designated for water
received from the South side of Pikes Peak. One can’t and should not compare
the two, much like comparing apples and screwdrivers. If you are interested in
learning more about where and how we get our water, we encourage all
shareholders to attend monthly Board of Directors Meetings, every 2nd Tuesday
of the month at 7:30 pm at 209 Broadway. And you are also encouraged to sign up
for a system tour. This will give you a better idea of how your water reaches
your delivery point. Call Connie at 371-4312 to set this up.
