The month of September has been very warm for September.
According to AG Met sensor located in Penrose, the High during the day has
reached 94 degrees and the Low recorded was 40 degrees at night. Total
precipitation received through the first 3 weeks of September was .31 of an
inch. Hopefully we can expect a snowy winter this year to bring us out of this
drought.
Brush Hollow Reservoir has only gained 3 feet over the
past 2 months since we completely finished the first irrigations. This is a
slow process with the creek not providing much water over the summer months.
Most of rains that provided precipitation to the north of us was located too
far east therefore did not impact our ability to capture the rain in Beaver
Creek.
The staff has been working on repairs of lines that had
issues during irrigation. The most recent was discovering a line on 3rd
Street on the West Side will need to be replaced as the old cement lines are
broken and filled with roots and debris not allowing the water to flow.
Replacing the line will begin either late September or early October.
Steve Kastner our engineer has come through again and
successfully applied for Grant monies from the Colorado Water Conservation
Board to continue relining the upper canal. The Grant was formally approved at
a meeting on September 19th providing us with an additional $80,000
towards this phase 2 of the project. Continuation of the project is to begin
the middle of October.
As a reminder to all of those shareholders with account
balances, interest accrues monthly and every month your balance will be
impacted. Assessments pay for the operational costs for Beaver Park Water. As a
shareholder you are required to pay this regardless of how many irrigations you
receive, as irrigations are based on water availability. Unfortunately we all
are in the same situation when a drought occurs, it impacts every shareholder.
We can only hope the drought pattern does not stay with us next year.
One thing we all can look forward to is Penrose Apple
Days to be held Saturday October the 6th. Enjoy the school floats
and local bands in the Parade. The Penrose Park has many festivities to enjoy
during the day and fireworks at night. Support your local farmers and buy some
locally grown apples!
