The month of August finally provided us with some rain! Total
to date per the AIG met sensor in Penrose recorded .96 of an inch of
precipitation. Temperatures primarily recorded mid 80’s with a high of 93 and a
low of 45 degrees. However the end of Augusts’ weather predictions has promised
to be back in the 90’s.
A small amount of creek water has continuously fed our
diversion and water is coming into our upper canal. This has allowed us to
provide water to Penrose Water District and some water has been able to pass on
to Brush Hollow Reservoir. There has been a slight change in the levels at the
lake. Due to the rains above causing cloudy water, Penrose Water District has
continued to use water from the lake rather than directly from the upper canal.
When the water clears, delivery will resume from the upper canal.
With all that being said, we still do not have enough water
in the reservoir or in the upper ditch to entertain the idea of starting second
irrigations. We are at the mercy of the weather and at this time even with the
recent rains we are still classified as being in an extreme drought. We are
hopeful this winter will provide enough snow to pull us out of this situation.
It has barely been a year and we must say goodbye to Charlie
Avila who is leaving us for a job in Colorado Springs. Charlie’s last day will
be August 31, 2018. We wish him well in his new job.
As we are not running water at this time; we will not
actively be seeking a replacement for Charlie. If you or someone you know may be
interested in becoming a ditch rider early next year (Jan-Feb); please stop by
the office and pick up an application for consideration. Position is full time
with benefits and fuel allotment. Perfect for either a single individual living
here in Penrose or someone who has a retirement that may be looking for
supplemental income. We can provide more details in the office.
