October’s weather for Penrose went from Summer temperatures 86 degrees on the 5th to Winter on the 27th with a high of 17 degrees. We did experience a very wet snow accumulating between 8-12 inches depending on where you live but unfortunately the total precipitation was only ¼ of inch.
The upper
ditch lining is in full swing and the Winter weather set back the anticipated
completion date of October 31st, as cement could not be delivered
for several days. On the West side our “Grand Canyon” project on the upper
ditch is very close to completion. All the pipe is in place. We are waiting for
the transitions from both sides to be completed and clean-up of the area. This
also is a cement project that has been delayed due to the weather conditions.
We are hopeful that the weather will be kind, and not delay these projects much
longer.
We have
one more project this fall to be completed and that is the gate replacement at
our diversion. This is the gate that opens up into Beaver Creek and has had a
continued leakage issue over the past several years. It was determined that
replacement of the gate was our only option as an onsite evaluation discovered
over time it has deteriorated beyond repair. Water loss overtime has been
significant and with drought conditions we can’t afford to lose any water.
When our
area was not classified under a red-flag warning, mowing continued. In order to
keep the canal dry for the upper ditch lining, a temporary dam was placed in at
L St. this water was used by Shareholders rather than spilling over down the
creek to the Arkansas.
