May certainly provided us with a variety of weather
patterns; snow, rain, wind, and heat. Temperatures fluctuated from a high of 84
degrees to a low of 29 degrees and anything in between. According to the AG met
sensor located in Penrose we received a total of 2.30 inches of recorded
moisture.
Irrigations continued throughout the month and most of our
shareholders have received their first irrigations. Due to the rain and snow,
some shareholders opted out first irrigations and some shareholders are just now
plowing and planting as the rain kept them out of their fields. In some cases
second irrigations will begin soon, but those who are late in getting their
fields ready will still be able to receive their first irrigations.
Please remember to coordinate cutting your fields with your
ditch rider. It is important that water deliveries are not scheduled to
adjacent properties during the drying process. The more the ditch rider knows
the less chance your hay will be compromised.
Reminder – In effort to allow the ditch riders a weekend off
every other weekend, the ditch riders and the superintendent rotate weekends. A
posting on the office window has the name and contact numbers of the ditch
riders that will be responsible for the irrigation water for each weekend.
Just as in the past, many properties have sold and changed
hands. Some of the new owners are not familiar with Penrose’s irrigation
system. Please, be a good neighbor, help out if you can. Some of us have been
in their shoes at one time; any assistance you can provide will make for a
smoother irrigation.
Announcement - We are currently accepting applications for a
ditch rider position.
