May 2023 Update

We have been so fortunate this month to have received over three inches of wet and wonderful rain throughout Penrose. Rain dances have been very successful, we must have some over achievers.

We want to announce and welcome our newest ditch rider, Megan Green that will delivering water to the East side. Megan was born and raised in Penrose and is familiar with surroundings as well as many people in Penrose. However, delivering water is a very new experience for her. This being said; the training process has been slower as Connie, our Superintendent was out for surgery and currently in a recovery period. We are taking advantage of the assistance of two former ditch rider’s and our current ditch riders to help her. Unfortunately, the lines on the East side are mostly underground and have a unique method to switch water from one box to another, so please, please be very patient as we are making every effort to deliver water as best as possible. Megan has her own cell phone number different than the usual sequential numbers it is 719-280 7816. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your understanding.

The West side and Middle Lines are delivering first irrigations with completions upcoming. Due to the significant rain, when receiving irrigation water, the ground is becoming saturated more quickly than usual leading to tail water running on the roads. Please be aware of how much water is too much, contact your ditch rider immediately when you are unable to control the water so it can be moved. We realize this is a new problem, do not make any changes at the box yourself, only the Ditch Rider should be making changes with the water. With all the rain we have been receiving in our area, up North has had plenty of rain also. The creek has been running over 100 c.f.s. for the last two weeks of May. We have the Diversion gate open to receive the maximum water we can hold in our system. Brush Hollow is currently at 86.5 on the lake gage. The weather report for the following week shows continued chances of more rain. Penrose is GREEN…and we are happy for it.

On a different note, associated with rain…due to all the rain the grass and weeds have grown quickly and mowing is taking place everywhere. PLEASE DO NOT POINT YOUR MOWERS GRASS GUARD AT THE OPEN CANALS. GRASS IN THE CANALS NOT ONLY PLUGS UP THE SCREENS, IT ALSO WILL PLUG UP THE GATES ON IRRIGATION PIPES. We have been experiencing a significant amount of grass clippings in the canal, please be mindful where your grass clippings are going. Thank you!

We are thankful for the rain!
