The month started much like the previous month, hot and dry and then…..Surprise! September provided us an early taste of winter with 6-8 inches of snow that equated to almost a ½ inch of precipitation for the Penrose area. Unfortunately; after a few days of winter, we returned back to the hot and dry weather. The temperatures changed from a high on the 6th of 98 degrees to 41 degrees as the high on the 9th. That is a drastic difference.
The snow melt in the higher elevations did provide the creek
level to rise and we were able to provide a second irrigation to a few
shareholders. The creek levels at this time have been reduced with the closing
of gate at Skaguay to 5.1 c.f.s. Providing us a reading of 3.5 c.f.s. at the L
Street weir. Irrigations were discontinued as an additional Gate change reduced
the output from Skaguay to 3.5 c.f.s. with a current reading at our L Street
weir of .61 c.f.s that is only providing water to Penrose Water District’s
plant.
Two projects are scheduled on the upper canal for the month
of October. Both projects are eligible for the Grant money awarded to BPWI. “The Grand Canyon” project will be placing
pipe in the open canal area in effort to capture the water going to Brush
Hollow without the ground, shale and rock absorbing the water as it travels Westerly
towards the reservoir. Additionally, approximately 720 feet of upper canal
replacement lining will be accomplished during the same time frame.
The Ditch riders have started the mowing on the upper ditch
area and winter projects have started early this year. Building covers for
boxes, checking gates and valves. If you should have gate or box that is at our
delivery point you are concerned about, please contact Connie at 371-4312 and
she will add it to the list to be inspected for possible repair or replacement.
